Our N64 cart finds started to slow down as we approached a complete PAL collection (one to go as I write this), so we turned our attention to interesting exclusives and variants from other regions/countries. This research quickly turned into a rabbit hole of information (which we are still exploring) however, quite early on we came across a website discussing, among other interesting things, Carmageddon64 having a censored release in Germany.

Intrigued, we investigated, and founf that the Zombies you mow down in your car in the UK version have been replaced by dinosaurs in the German version. In addition to this, the red blood in the UK release has been replaced by green blood in Germany.
We decided that, despite it being a PAL cart of a game we already own, these changes were significant enough to count as a ‘different’ game and so started an eBay search for the cart. As luck would have it we found a UK seller with a copy of the game, in good condition, for a reasonable price and we snapped it up. Sure enough, upon loading the game, the green-blooded dinos were there on the screen.

Looking at the carts themselves, they are identical in art and logos with the only difference being the cart serial numbers. The UK version reads: NUS-NCDY-EUR and the German version reads: NUS-NCDX-EUU; something which would be useful to know if you wanted to pick up (or avoid!) the censored German version of Carmageddon64.

Happy Gaming!!
